Backlinks – What They Are, Why You Need Them and How to Get Them

Backlinks, sometimes referred to as inbound links, are incoming links to a website published on another website. In search engine results page (SERP) ranking, backlinks are one of the leading aspects that determine how high one’s website gets displayed in a search engine’s search, such as Google.

Webmasters commonly use backlinking as a way to push up their websites to the first page of Google and by doing so, dramatically increase organic traffic to their website. Instead of paying for expensive website marketing, one can easily and inexpensively push their website to the top by using simple backlinking methods.

Google, for example, awards webpages PR (page rank) depending on how many backlinks that webpage has pointing to it. The more backlinks, the higher your PR and the higher you will appear in a Google search. However, PR also has another use: the higher the PR of a webpage linking in to your website is, the higher your PR will become. Search engines read your backlinks and the tags given to them and with that information they assign more importance to your website when someone searches for the specified tags as keywords.

How does a webmaster go about, obtaining backlinks? The process is definitely not a difficult one and does not require a webmaster to hire outside help in order to obtain backlinks. As mentioned above, a backlink is an incoming link to a website from another website – this means that any link placed on a webpage which links to your website is potentially a quality backlink. A webmasters goal, in this case, would be to maximize the number of links pointing to their website.

The most common and objective methods of gaining backlinks are by publishing articles online, submitting your website to website directories and commenting in discussion forums or blogs together with adding your link to your comments or articles. You can also find other websites with the same niche as yours and ask the owner of the website for a reciprocal link – where each webmaster will post a link to the other webmaster’s website on their own website. Another important method is to add your website’s link to your online signature regardless of where your signature will appear.

A website’s backlinks can also gradually grow if the website’s content or products are useful, since other people who wish to share your website with others will end up adding a link to your website on their webpages.

Creating backlinks online is an important step in gaining traffic to your website and elevating its success. Traffic directed from search engine results are of huge importance and there is no reason why you should not harness that potential traffic.
