I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of hearing only about Google. Yes, it’s the biggest search engine on the Internet and probably will be for a good long time, but it’s not the only one. Combined, Yahoo! and Bing get over 30% of the world’s search traffic – that’s a lot of searches. So, when you build a new site, how do you tweak it for the under-appreciated little brothers of the big G?
Yahoo! has been around for quite some time and they’ve stuck to the core of their old-school ranking criteria, even while upgrading to include focus on things like backlinks . So, to get ranked in Yahoo!, you’ll focus on the basics of incoming links with heavy anchor text, but also on the content on your pages – including the keyword optimization of your articles. Additionally, Yahoo! puts a hefty focus on directory listings. If you can get your content listed in the DMOZ directory, it will have a huge impact, while the Yahoo! directory provides an equally large boost (though at a cost of $299 a year).
Bing is a newer search engine, so that means it is less sophisticated and still missing quite a few sites from its index. It does have a few key differences to watch for as well. First, Bing really likes to see the keywords for a page in the title tag. That means the text at the top of the browser needs to match your keywords. Additionally, Bing likes content with links to and from sites that have solid title text.
Bing also likes older sites that have a strong presence in multiple directories and on multiple authority sites like blogs and forums. All you can do here is wait and continue marketing your site. Eventually the hard work will pay off. Keep the word count of your pages up too – Bing wants to see at least 300 words of content per page to provide “value” to your readers. Sprinkle in a few good links to other sites pointing out of your site and you’ll bump your ranking as well.
In short, very little changes when you switch from Google optimization to Yahoo! or Bing. Almost all search engines use a similar algorithm, which is great for us because it streamlines the entire process. So, do you need to do any special work for the other search engines? Not really. But, if you want to reach out to a new traffic source with less competition it’s definitely a good option.
