I am a huge fan of blogging and have seen the traffic a good blog can generate. There’s nothing like a blog for generating a strong relationship with your customers and potential customers. It is a great place to show off your knowledge and keep people coming back for more.
So how DO you keep people coming back for more? What makes a good blog?
1.) A good blog will be entertaining
People read blogs to gain knowledge and keep up to date with the latest news on their favourite subject – but people want to do this whilst being entertained. A blog that you read on a regular basis has captured your attention.
You actively look forward to reading it and check back to it to see if there has been any new posts.
How can you do this? Tell stories!
People love real life experiences. What about the things that have gone wrong? Gone right? It only has to be vaguely related to your topic – as long as you can find some link with it you’re fine.
2.) A good blog is posted to regularly
I often see blogs which go MONTHS between posts. You must post regularly to keep people coming back and in order for them to regard it as a useful source of information. Your posts don’t have to be long (see below) but they must be regular.
3.) A good blog contains useful concise information in a variety of forms
Keep people informed AND entertained and you’ll do well, but the simple truth is that people are busy and whilst they might read blogs for pleasure they will probably be put off by masses of text.
Keep your posts fairly short and post a variety of content – for example video and audio. It doesn’t even always have to be your own – try posting related videos you found on You Tube.
4.) A good blog encourages conversation
The best blogs get lots of comments – so actively encourage people posting comments in your blog posts and when people do make sure you respond. Create a conversation!
